Qualifications and Eligibility Requirements for B2 Visa

To apply for a B2 Visa, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Clear Purpose of Visit: You must demonstrate a genuine reason for travelling to the US (tourism, family visit, medical treatment, etc.). 
  2. Intent to Stay Temporarily: You must show that your visit is short-term and that you plan to leave the US before your authorised stay expiress.
  3. Sufficient Financial Means: You must prove that you have enough funds to cover your travel, accommodation, and other expenses during your stay. 
  4. Strong Ties to India: You must demonstrate meaningful ties to your home country (employment, property ownership, family responsibilities, business interests) that would compel you to return to India.
  5. Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in the United States. 
  6. No Intention to Immigrate: A B2 visa is strictly a temporary, non-immigrant visa. Applicants who appear to have immigrant intent will be refused. 
  7. No Criminal History: Any prior convictions, especially for offences involving moral turpitude, may lead to refusal.

Documents Required for B2 Visa

Mandatory Documents 

  • Valid Passport: Current passport with at least 6 months of validity beyond your intended stay. Bring all old passports too. 
  • DS-160 Confirmation Page: Printed confirmation page from the completed DS-160 online non-immigrant visa application form, including the barcode.
  • MRV Fee Receipt: Proof that the non-refundable $185 MRV visa application fee has been paid. 
  • Appointment Confirmation Letter: Printed confirmation of both your Visa Application Centre (VAC) and Embassy interview appointments. 
  • Passport-Sized Photographs: Recent photographs meeting US visa photo requirements (typically uploaded digitally with DS-160, but carry physical copies). 
  • Proof of Financial Means: Bank statements (last 3–6 months), fixed deposit certificates, ITR (Income Tax Returns), pay slips, or proof of business income. 
  • Employment / Business Proof: Letter from employer confirming employment, leave approval, and salary. For self-employed: business registration, GST returns.
  • Proof of Ties to India: Property ownership documents, family ties (marriage certificate, children's birth certificates), or other strong connections to India.

  • Visiting family or friends: Invitation letter from the host in the US; host's proof of US citizenship/residence status 
  • Medical treatment: Medical diagnosis from Indian doctor; letter from a US-based physician confirming treatment; proof of funds to cover medical expenses 
  • Students or minors: School or college enrolment letter; parental consent letter (if travelling alone); birth certificate 
  • Retired applicants: Pension documents; proof of retirement; evidence of financial self-sufficiency 
  • Prior US travel: Previous US visas (even if expired); any old passports containing prior US visa stamps
  • Property or assets: Property deeds, vehicle registration, or other asset documents demonstrating ties to India 

How to Apply for a B2 Visa: Step-by-Step

  • Complete the Online DS-160 Form: Fill out the form accurately and print the confirmation page. 
  • Pay the Visa Fee: Pay the application fee and keep the receipt. 
  • Schedule Visa Appointments:
      -->One at the Visa Application Center (VAC) for photo and fingerprint scan. 
      -->One for your visa interview at the U.S. Consulate or Embassy.
  • Prepare Required Documents for VAC Appointment: Passport, DS-160 confirmation, appointment confirmation, and photo.
  • Attend the Visa Interview: Bring all documents and answer questions from the consular officer.
